Working remotely has come to the limelight after the pandemic hit us in 2020. Many people found themselves working remotely from the comfort of their homes, and since then, many have opted to work from home permanently or transited to a hybrid model.

Companies like Twitter, Facebook, Google, TCS, Infosys, and many more offer permanent remote work and hybrid options for various job roles that previously required you to come to the office.

Moving toward the future, it is clear that remote work will become part and parcel of our lives, but what exactly is working remote, what are the benefits and challenges in the long term, who would benefit from this model greatly, and what does the future hold for us.

What is remote work?

We all must have heard the term 'Work From Home’ or working remotely after the pandemic (COVID-19) hit us. In simple terms, remote work is the work that you can do without commuting to your office location. This means that you can work from the comfort of your home, from a hotel in Bali, from a cafe, or even from the first class lounge in an airport.

You can work remotely with a laptop and a stable internet connection. Good internet is vital as you don't want a laggy connection during a team meeting or a client presentation. Remote work is preferable for both employees and employers as both parties have huge benefits. According to a survey by CoSo Cloud, a private-cloud solutions provider for Adobe Connect, employers reported 77% greater productivity. Employees reported increased savings, better health, and more time to spend with their families.

Types of Remote Work

Remote work is an umbrella term that encompasses various ways of working remotely as it gives you quite a lot of freedom to work without visiting your office (at least daily)

Working remotely gives you the freedom to choose where you work from; certain people live like a 'Digital Nomad' that is, they work digitally while traveling a lot.

It allows you to choose who you work with; certain people work in co-working spaces. There is also Workcation (more on this below πŸ‘‡) when they feel the saying '... working from the comfort of their homes' has turned into '... working from the confines of their homes.' Depending on how you use the freedom given to you by your employer, there are few ways to work remotely.
